How sports clubs, schools, and community groups can access funding for life-saving defibrillators
Installing an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at your club or facility is one of the most valuable investments you can make for the safety of your members and visitors. Yet for many community organisations, the cost of purchasing and maintaining an AED can feel out of reach. Fortunately, New Zealand has an excellent range of funding options and practical pathways to help you make it happen.
Step 1: Identify your community’s need
Start by clearly defining why an AED is needed. Is your club located far from emergency services? Do you host large crowds or physically demanding activities? The more specific your case, the easier it becomes for funders to see the benefit.
It helps to include:
- The number of people who use your venue each week
- The distance to the nearest hospital or ambulance station
- Any previous medical incidents or identified risks
- Plans for public access outside your operating hours
Demonstrating genuine community benefit is essential. Most grants are available only to not-for-profit organisations or registered community groups where the wider public may benefit
Step 2: Define your goals and outcomes
Funders want to know what impact their support will have. Outline your project’s aim (for example, “to make our community centre a recognised Heart Safe location”) and describe measurable outcomes, such as:
- One AED installed and registered on the national AED locator
- Ten volunteers trained in CPR and AED use
- Clear signage and access plan for emergencies
Include how you’ll maintain the device long-term — batteries and pads require periodic replacement — and whether you’ll fundraise for those future costs or include them in your application.
Step 3: Plan your implementation
A well-structured plan builds confidence. Indicate:
- Where the AED will be installed and who will have access
- Who will oversee maintenance and checks
- How you’ll raise community awareness once installed
Supporting evidence such as photos of the site, quotes from suppliers (like us here AED NZ), or letters from local stakeholders can strengthen your proposal.
